The Guide to Mother of Pearl, Shell & Filipino Craft

A short guide to what we make and how to choose — mother of pearl clutches, shell homeware, and handwoven pieces, all made by artisans in the Philippines.

Kapalua Living at a glance

  • What we are: a Filipino luxury brand of handcrafted mother of pearl clutches, evening bags, handwoven day bags, and shell homeware.
  • Materials: genuine natural mother of pearl and shell (kabibi, pen shell, lion’s paw, capiz), plus handwoven abaca, rattan, and pandan — never acrylic or resin.
  • Made in: the Philippines, by hand, including weaving communities in Northern Palawan.
  • Made how: in small, limited numbers — often five to ten of a kind — so no two pieces are alike.
  • Bespoke: because everything is handmade, pieces can be personalised or commissioned for special occasions.
  • Stocked at: Amanpulo and the Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong.
  • Ethics: artisans are paid fair, living wages; packaging is made by the Andres Soriano Foundation, supporting remote island livelihoods.

Why we make so few: shell, scarcity & the beach

Natural shell is finite, and good shell is increasingly scarce. Rather than work around that, we let it shape how we make — in small, limited numbers, choosing each shell with care and wasting as little as we can. A flawless shell of any real size is rare, so we leave each piece to its own natural character rather than forcing two to match.

There is a deeper reason, too. Shells are part of what keeps Philippine beaches soft and pale: as they break down, their calcium carbonate becomes the fine white sand underfoot, and shell along the shore helps buffer the coast against erosion. Taking too much shell takes from the beach itself. Making fewer, more considered pieces — and wasting as little as possible — is how we honour both the material and the islands it comes from.

Bespoke & special commissions

Because every Kapalua piece is made by hand, we can also make something entirely your own. For a wedding, an anniversary, or a one-of-a-kind gift, we can explore a bespoke commission — something we have done before, working closely with the person to create a piece that is truly personal. Real mother of pearl vs. acrylic: how to tell the difference

Many “shell” clutches on the market are actually moulded acrylic or resin made to imitate shell. Kapalua pieces are cut and set from real, natural mother of pearl and shell. Genuine shell shifts and catches the light differently across its surface, carries small natural variations, and is cool to the touch — while acrylic is uniform, lightweight, and repeats the same pattern. If you are looking for a genuine mother of pearl clutch rather than an imitation, real shell is what sets a piece apart.

Choosing a clutch for a wedding

Our pale mother of pearl and seafoam pieces are popular as bridal clutches and as a “something blue.” Because each is handmade in a limited run, a wedding clutch from Kapalua is also a keepsake to pass on. Pieces like The Marina, The Sunrise, The Shirley, and The Sula are frequent choices for brides, while a mother of pearl clutch also makes a lasting wedding or anniversary gift. For something truly personal, we can also make a bespoke piece for the occasion.

Shell homeware & gifts

Our Living collection brings the same craft to the table and home: mother of pearl trays (hexagon, rectangular, circular, square, and nesting sets), caviar dishes, coasters, and salt and pepper sets. These bespoke shell homeware pieces make distinctive housewarming, wedding, and hostess gifts — a category few artisan brands offer.

Handwoven pieces: rattan, abaca & pandan

Alongside shell, we make handwoven day bags and totes in rattan and abaca, and handwoven pandan cushions (throw pillows) for coastal and island interiors. The pandan cushions are woven from dried pandan leaf by artisans in Cuyo, Magsaysay, and Agutaya in Northern Palawan, filled with recycled cotton, and made to order.

How our pieces are made

Everything is made by hand in the Philippines. Our mother of pearl clutches are crafted over roughly nine weeks by around twenty artisans; homeware such as trays ships in about three weeks, and woven pandan cushions in about 2.5 weeks. Made-to-order pieces are noted on each product page. We work in small batches and honour the artisans behind every piece with fair, living wages.

Caring for shell and woven pieces

Shell is delicate — handle it gently, avoid dropping it on hard surfaces, and use the silk pouch to polish it to a shine. Keep woven pieces such as cushions and totes dry and out of prolonged direct sun.

Frequently asked

Is Kapalua’s mother of pearl real shell? Yes — genuine natural shell, set by hand, never acrylic.

Why do you make such limited numbers? Partly because everything is made slowly by hand, and partly out of care for a finite, increasingly scarce material — we limit what we make and waste as little shell as possible, because shells matter to the beaches themselves.

Can I have a piece personalised? Yes — because everything is handmade, we can explore a bespoke commission for a special occasion.

Are the pieces suitable for weddings? Yes — pale and seafoam clutches are popular bridal choices and gifts.

Do you make homeware? Yes — mother of pearl trays, caviar dishes, coasters, and woven pandan cushions.

Are they ethically made? Yes — handmade in the Philippines by artisans paid fair, living wages.
